B. Michael Rubin is a man of extraordinary wealth and vision. Unlike most billionaires, he earned his wealth the hard way – through inheritance. While family ties are not necessarily the stepping stone to destitution, in his case they were. He was born with a silver spoon around his neck, and had he only learned to use it instead of persistently eating with his hands, he might have followed his family's legacy on the Ivy League path.
Instead, Michael graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English from Livingston College, where their open admissions policy guaranteed his acceptance. At that time, Livingston was part of Rutgers University, a mere state university, until the college's radical politics forced the university to rethink their priorities and shut it down shortly after his graduation in 1979.
Armed with his useless degree in English, Michael proceeded to blaze a trail of anonymity that no one in his family or even he himself could ever label a career. He spent a year teaching grammar in a New Jersey Catholic school, much to the horror of his Jewish family. He also spent ten years teaching English grammar at an all girls' school in Manhattan, leading his father to ask if his son was gay. “There aren't any male teachers, administrators, or students? What are you doing there?” Michael's mother wondered, “What's the point of teaching grammar? Nobody knows the difference between who and whom anyway.”
Further non-career pursuits included copyediting at a trade magazine for the multi-level marketing industry. Unfortunately, no one had explained to the founder/publisher that multi-level marketing companies like Amway and Herbalife don't advertise as a rule, spreading their gospel via word of mouth. Excited to be involved in the launching of a new magazine based in L.A. and designed in New York, Michael was shocked when the magazine quickly folded.
Having exhausted his patience and ambition, Michael left the US in 2007 and fled to South America, where he took up residence among the lowlifes, escaped former Nazis, and frustrated poets. He currently resides in Curitiba, Brazil, where he is married to a Brazilian woman with infinite patience and low expectations.
